Default Seat Belt Help!

Seems like a silly problem, I know.. but I wondered if any of y'all had any tips. (forgive my usage of such words as "thingy" and "doo-hicky" and etc). I have one of those older style seatbelts that hook into a motorized buckle above the driver/passenger windows. When you stop the car (I think) the motorized buckle is supposed to move away from the chest so in turn you only have to mess with a belt strap. It's a horrible contraption, whoever came up with it (imo).
Anyway, the motor doesn't work at all so if i need to buckle up, I have to do buckle the lap belt and then the shoulder belt. This isn't too irritating.. but to add onto that, the lap buckle is broken so if I want to buckle up I have to stick the lap belt into the passenger side buckle (yeah my car's a heap I know).
What I'm getting at is.. is there anything I can really do about that? Maybe somehow install a new seat belt? I was also wondering how racing seats work... cuz I know the belts are hooked up differently (in what way, I have no idea.. I Just know they come up thru the back)... If y'all would suggest using racing seats cuz of the seat belts ...I'd go along with it. I think it'd be pretty silly to put racing seats in a car with absolutely nothing race worthy in it.. But i plan on putting a whole bunch of new parts soon.. Er.. anyway, anyone know what I can do about this seat belt problem so I dn't get crazily ripped off by mechanics? "oh yeah..well.. we'll have to replace the engine cuz uh... it's the only way to um.. fix the seat belts.. you've got a busted flux capaciter too" "omg no way really?! oh man.."

Default RE: Seat Belt Help!

you should be able to find a new latch in a junkyard, so at least that will be fixed. and i think if you leave the shoulder one buckled, you can just open the door and get out. the door will pull it away from you enough that its out of the way. as for racing seats, im pretty sure that even though the harnesses are WAY more effective than ordinary shoulder belts, they are not approved for street use, so a cop could still give you a ticket for not wearing your seatbelt. and the expense of a decent set of seats and harnesses greatly outweigh the amount they could save from repairing yours.
