Default Servicing A 1998 Civic Coupe VTEC

Just bought this the other day and I'm gonna give it a service Engine Number is a D16Y8 1.6 VTEC. I have some Castrol RS Formula 0W-40 fully synthetic oil ( used to use in me Renault 5 Turbo ) would this be suitable to go in my Civic??????? Also what brand of Spark plugs would you guys recomend????? Gonna be changing the timing belt too as the milage is 57,000 ( is that about right to change a timing belt? ) Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm based in Liverpool in the UK so if anyone knows of any decent places to buy parts kinda cheap would also be a bonus. Thanks in advance [sm=smiley1.gif]

I personally am a big fan of Castrol oil.

BOSCH-PLATINUM+4 SPARK PLUG is a good plug - kind of expensive but it's a good plug for imports.

The timing belt should be changed every 60K to 80K. If your grandmother drives the car - 80K is OK, if you like to run it hard from time to time go for the 60K.

I have heard of honda engines going well over the 60K to 80K mile mark. However, when the belt breaks it will take the head with it. The valves and pistons will hit each other and you will be looking at having the head repaired at my guess - close to a 1000 dollars. Having the belt replaced will run you about $25 to $50 for the belt and $100 to $200 for the labor. IMO its not worth taking a chance.

i went to a local shop to find out the cost of getting a 100k mile tuneup, all fluids changed, oil change, new air filter, oil filter and i asked about a new timing belt and water pump. The service man told me the same thing that 99civic said below:

He also told me that on a 98 civic the timing belt is waterpump driven, so if the water pump goes you will also have problems, he quoted me that the pump was close to 370$ which i plan on having replaced along with the belts and all i mentioned earlier. Get the belt done to be safe, but check the pump and make sure its running ok so u save some money later on - hope it helps
