Shifting problem, civic won't go into gear

Default Won't shift while running
I have a 97 honda civic that won't shift while the car is running making a lot of noise almost like grinding gears I believe.
while the car is turned off it will shift.
Can anyone help me out here I have never worked on a clutch.
