smell like propane gas
Hi guys,
I had a question. Lately, after a drive and parking the car, I smell a scent that's similar to propane gas when I get out of the car. It's really strange. The smell is light and it seems to be gone in a few seconds.
Do you have any idea why this might be? Where is it coming from? Only thing I changed about the car recently is
putting white lithium grease on the door hinges.

RE: smell like propane gas
Your cat makes a smell that is like rotten eggs. I'm pretty sure that this occurs even if the cat is fine, because its the smell that is created as a by product of the rxn in the cat. I'm not completly sure that is wat happens, but im pretty sure.

RE: smell like propane gas
In the cases that I have seen when the CAT gets burned out it smells like propane. When the CAT is about to go out or gets clogged it smells like rotten eggs. It is not to say that the CAT is for sure bad, but when the smell gets stronger (either propane or rotten eggs) the CAT is the first I would look at. I asked about the year of the car because for OBDII(96+) on they are suppose to have the second O2 sensor and self diagnose the health of the CAT. However I know my 97 doesn't catch a bad CAT. I have failed emissions test miserably due to the bad CAT and had been driving around like that without even knowing it. I replaced the CAT and passed with flying colors. Go figure. [sm=smiley29.gif]
