Smoking 91 civic wagon

my 91 civic wagon started smoking yesterday after a long drive in the mountains, usually when downshifiting, but also when accelerating in 5th gear. the car only has 101k on it. runs great, gets 40 mpg - is my engine shot?? suggestions please!! thanks
