i take back my first post here because it happened to be a drunk friends post.

the accident that was mentioned could also be a freak accident. i know for a fact that even if your driving slow in nasty weather stuff can happen. so cut the guy some slack and help him out. Civic Si 00 you are a ***.

Seriously though, if he isn't mature enough to treat his car well, and blew his engine (most likely by racing) let him deal with not having a car until he can save up enough to get one. Part out the car, make some money back.

 

I think all of you guys need to just leave him alone. First off, doesnt it possibly say something that the father wants to help fix it? I mean, in my eyes, if the father feels that helping is the right thing to do, then it seems to me that he must trust his son enough that he would help him out with the problem. Civic Si, you are a mistake and should probably cease to exist. Also, just with anything else in this world, stuff can go wrong. You guys don't know what his history is so just shut up and try to help the guy instead of ripping him a new one. Half of you people probably dont even know what you are talking about. Also, i think i would trust someone like mxs or roto who know what they are talking about from their experience. Most of you are probably still in diapers.

Wow o wow. Came in kinda late into this but... "I" would probably swap it with the stock engine. Things happen, parts wear and tear and stuff breaks. And... if "I" were a mod I would totally ban that 8 year old si kid, cuz alot of the stuff he said isn't cool.

When I started the whole it's probably the kids fault thing it was that reading between the lines stuff. I also speak from experience, I had a pretty nice Ford Escort DOHC 1.8 that had pullys, ignition, I.H.E., the works it was pertty quick... when I was a teen in high school, and I did some pretty crazy stuff, and yes my parents HELPED buy it, not bought it for me... Little did I know I had a problem with the oil pump, and it failed during a race... I threw a rod through the block, I won the race but the car died doing it, and my dad said guess what pal, you're on your own on this one, and by the way your insurance is now on you too, just be glad you didn't wreck or get caught... and if It ever happens again you will not be driving on my insurance policy, and I was also grounded for like a month.... so then I had to figure that one out on my own, that's when I went and did a buy here pay here deal on my civic, and paid it off in like three months, on my own...

Can you imagine going from driving that car to school and work, to being 17 and having your mom drop you off in her mini van because you blew your motor up racing some idiot in a civic, which by the way got straight up dusted by my escort.... and now I'm a civic owner, ha figure that one out.... Anyway that was punishment enough for me.... My dad wouldn't even let me drive their van to work, he said if I didn't care enough for my own car that I was responsible for, I sure wouldn't care for his, and he wasn't about to have me out there driving his van like that.... That was definately a lesson learned for me, and an expensive one at that... had it not been that way I wouldn't have changed my driving habits though, so he did me a big favor...

If the poster had been more specific about what happened there wouldn't be any speculation about it, or any of this trash talking.... and by the way you don't have to be really dumb to blow an engine... age, speed, driving habits all play a a factor... I sure didn't have my dad out there trying to figure my mess out for me though, I had to man up and handle it myself... I made the mess and I cleaned it up...

The whole reason I even mentioned any of that was that I thought it was wierd that the dad was the one on here looking for a solution for the motor his son blew up, and not the son trying to find the solution for him self, how's he going to learn if he's not having to take on the responsibility....

I, unlike many of the rest of you, also offered some useful Ideas on what to do to rectify the situation... and as I put it in my first post, it was just my opinion, obviously I nor anyone else on here know what really happened... and "blew his motor" leaves a lot of room for speculation.... I am still waiting for him to eleborate on "blew his motor" so some of us can actually offer sound advice into the situation... until that happens the best advice is to replace it with the same engine... However, it may be repairable, and if he would elaborate on the symptoms, perhaps someone could say yeah fix it or no replace it...

And a Used engine might be cheaper, but my suggestion for the re-manufactured engine from Jasper comes with a fully backed parts and labor 3yr, 36kmile warranty. I know first hand that that company is reputable, I know two people who have used them, both people I know are very pleased with the product...

Chill with the trash talk though, it's un called for, and totally not helping anybody, and like someone else mentioned it's the reason why people think the way they do and make the assumptions they make about tuners...

 

I wouldn't do Jasper for one reason price. Usually I'm able to find three used engines for the price of one of those. And yes, the "blown engine" might be fixable...how many times did my friend "blow his engine" and it turned out to be something stupid, like two spark plugs wearing off (iridium OBX) or his distributor falling off...

 

Yeah, I can understand about price... that was one of the reasons I replaced my ford when the rod broke... rebuilds were to much, and I didn't want to risk keeping a used motor for my daily driver... My civic has been pretty good to me other than the head gasket... I just recomended them because I know their customer service is good, and they do have a good warranty, they are high priced though I wont argue that.

If price is the determining factor in it, not warranty, then find the best deal on a used one, try to find one that you can see/hear run, never buy one that is pulled and sitting in a garage somewhere, unless you know the seller really well... most likely if you get one from a salvage yard it has been tested, and will have a 30-90 day warranty, on parts only, not labor... if there's no money back or replacement for at least 30 days I would walk away and find another one...

I stuck a $200 used motor, without all of the power adders in my ford and sold it to pay for part of the much more reliable, and much better on gas honda... so yeah I know about used motors, BUT I was selling the car not keeping it for myself... If I had been keeping it I probably would have rebuilt the used motor myself prior to installing it...

Edit: before someone jumps in and says that's an unethical thing to do to sell a car... I compression tested it, it checked out fine, and it ran really good... I just did not want to keep the car after all that had happened... and it wasn't like I made a killing on it either, I let it go way less than it was worth and disclosed the fact that the engine was not original and was a used engine. I could not have sold the car not running...

 

If you want the reliabilty and a good warranty buy the jasper engine. it is guaranteed to work. Ibought one and it lasted. Also, how much is shipping if youbuy a used motor somewhere? If you have the money do that. The installed will take care of everything.

 

Repair the motor or swap in another b16. If your son isn't being responsible with the car either make him pay for it or sell it and buy him a slower, older, less appealing car. (My first car was a 97 escort, my dad bought it for me for $500 and it was the slowest POS on the road but it was reliable and gas efficiant and I payed the low insurance costs as well as any repairs done to it, really tought me how to take care of my own car without destroying my parents wallets, had that car 3 years then bought my civic) Good luck with whatever you do, I'm sure you'd be able to sell the car quick if it comes to that
