Someone of course tried a class action lawsuit over that, saying the odometer was intentionally "fast", making the warranty expire sooner than it should have. Actually the odometer uses digital counting so it should be pretty much dead on, but there is analog circuitry in the speedometer head driving the needle itself. There is probably some way to tinker with it.

The ECU compares engine speed to "road" speed so if it were even possible to change the gearing on the VSS you might get a CEL if the ECU doesn't like the new ratio.

You need to go a fairly long ways on a perfectly straight road to get a good GPS speed reading.

I wonder if it was a ploy by honda to get a few extra mpg out of the epa

The EPA is at least slightly smarter than to fall for that. They test cars on rollers and/or a test track and thus measure the distance independently.

I know they changed the requirements recently, but did they do the independent testing in 1993?
