Default speedo not working

1995 civic 4 door LX

My speedometer doest work it just sits at 20 mph, one time while driving it went up to 70 but then dropped back down. Also the odometer and trip do not work.

Any ideas? theres a sensor on the tranny for it right? that could be bad? or the cluster?

thanks!

Sounds like the VSS needs to be replaced. You can check it with a multimeter, too. Are you getting a check engine light after driving for a little bit?

The VSS is on the back of the transmission.

Speedometer should read zero with the sensor unplugged. If it doesn't it seems the speedometer head would be bad.

put a "new" speed sensor in from a junk yard and no change, it must be the cluster.....
