speedo problem

my 97 ex w/auto tranny speedo cuts in and out and it doesn't register my miles. what is the problem? is it a sensor? if so is it in the tranny and how do i fix it?

replace the speed sensor it should be a plastic piece bolted into the top of the tranny w/ one 10mm bolt w/ wires running to it.
or there could be a short in the wires coming from that sensor
