speedometer not working...
Speedometer stays at zero diagnosis:
Odometer keeps rolling normally, no CEL -- speedometer head / cluster is bad.
Odometer stopped, CEL on -- most likely sensor problem.
Odometer stopped, CEL not on -- most likely head problem.
Peculiar to certain model years (since you didn't say which year you have):
pre 1992 have mechanical speedometer cable instead of electronic sensor. Cable is prone to break: disconnect transmission end, pull out cable core and inspect.
1996 to 2000 models prone to fuse 15 problem.

Did you plug the speed sensor back in? The sensor is located on top of the back part of the transmission, above where the CV axles go in. It has a 3 wire plug.
Also a 97 is real prone to fuse 15 problem, where the wires on the back of the engine short out to the intake manifold bracket and blow fuse #15 under the dash. This cuts power to the speed sensor (among other things) and the speedometer stops working. So check if fuse #15 under the dash is blown.
