this has been a very helpful thread since my 98 is also having this noise. I noticed that it is most loud in the morning after sitting overnight. but when it gets hot or the car is warmed up, the noise is minimal if non-existent at times.

I doubt this is the actual clutch pedal and I've sprayed the daylights out of it with WD-40 with no improvement. plus, i had my wife push the pedal in and the noise is definitely coming out of the slave cylinder area.

I will have to try to put some grease on that part soon. it sure is annoying as others have said.

Success!
Greased it up as instructed by RonJ, and the noise went away.

Advice to anyone attempting this:
It takes quite a bit of grease to get the noise to go away completely.

Trust, that's great. Do you think most of the squeaking was coming from the interface between the slave cylinder and release fork. Or did you also need to add grease to the slave cylinder boot? I've got to grease mine now!

I just greased the hell out of everything. LOL
I greased the release fork/slave cylinder contact area and underneath the boot. i also sprayed wd-40 on the pedal linkage under the dash.

Did you take any pics while you were down there? You should do a DIY, I've been thinking of doing this but thought it would be too hard to get to without a lift or removing other parts.

nah i didn't get any pics.

it's pretty easy. here's some little short instructions.

1. just push the slave cylinder/clutch fork rubber cover off to the side
2. pull the slave cylinder boot off a little bit
3. put a bunch of brake grease under the slave cylinder boot
4. reinstall the boot
5. grease the part where the fork meets the slave cylinder. (use a lot of grease)
6. reinstall the rubber cover
7. go test the clutch
8. if clutch still makes some noise, repeat steps 1-6 and apply more grease.
