Default Starter turns, engine does not start

Hi, I have a '93 Honda Civic... Just bought it in January and a few days ago tried to crank it and it took a few tries... the next day I went to crank it again and it wouldn't start. I replaced the fuel filter hoping it was an easy fix but it still doesn't crank. I'm thinking it's something on the distributor but don't really have the money to replace the whole thing. The car is getting fuel, but I can't tell if it's getting spark. Does anyone know what's wrong and/or what I need to replace?
Thanks!!
-Andi

If the fuel pump primes, then check spark as described at the Spark link in my signature.

Any CEL codes?

You generally want to check the coil and igniter unit inside the distributor when there is no spark. If those are fine, check for voltage to the Blk/Yel wire attached to the coil. If there's no voltage, check the ignition switch.

Also check whether the timing belt snapped.
