Default Steering question

My steering problem still isn't fixed as yet. I spoke to another mechanic and he advised me to check the joint/ knuckle on the steering column to see if it is secure. How can I access this and how do I go about it without damaging anything or triggering the SRS.

You should be able to see that joint by looking up under the dash. It is a U-joint to allow tilting the wheel, so it is where the column pivots rather than right up at the wheel. There's another U-joint under the hood right where the shaft from the wheel connects to the steering rack.

Looks like you'll have to remove the cover (part #3 in the drawing) to see the interior joint.

Ok, I found the one under the dash but that one seems ok. How do I go about the one under the hood? Andare there anythings that I should/ should not do as precaution?
