stolen car/broken ignition
my car was stolen a couple months ago. i got it back but now there's a whole bunch of wires sticking out from under the steering wheel and i don't even use the key to start the car because it doesnt work when i put key in. i start the car by turning a plastic thing at the end of some wires. whats the best thing for me to do to fix this?
The plastic thing is probably the ignition switch. It is supposed to be mounted at the other end of the lock cylinder behind the key so when you turn the key, it turns and starts the car. The lock cylinder also locks the steering wheel shaft when the key is out. So in order to drive the car they needed to break something to get the wheel unlocked. You probably need to replace the cylinder and column lock assembly. Then the ignition switch can be mounted to work from the key like it originally did.
cvcrcr99- i put up a pic under an album titled "broken igniton switch"-let me know what u think.
mk378- thanks! i'll look into it. hopefully wont be too expensive but i'm tired of the way my interior looks. plus anyone can use anything to start my car- a.k.a not good.

wellfedhobo- thanks, I was wondering how to do that and disaznjason- that pic above is my car. N yea it sucks...had to pay hella money to the towing company and then the sherrifs dept for release papers
I think you need to replace that whole gray cast metal part, it looks like it has been broken off of its attachment. What is your model year? Also it looks like that is the automatic version, that makes a difference since those have an electric system so you can't pull the key out and lock the wheel unless the shift lever is in Park.
