Default strange noise

hey guys,

I got a '00 civic ex about 2 months ago and it had a loud exhaust on it when I got it so I didn't notice the "clunk" noise that happens when i start out in first gear and then shift into second. Now that I have a normal exhaust, I can hear it and its making me nervous.... At first I thought it was a wheel bearing but I can hear it every once and a while when the engine starts too. It usually does it once or twice when im releasing the clutch starting off and then when i shift into second. Nothing feels loose or anything and the car runs great...any ideas?? should I take it to the shop and have it looked at?

thanks a lot!

Craig

I'm assuming you have a manual transmission. If it happens only when you shift and only in first gear, you can pretty much assume that the problem has something to do with the transmission. Even if the wheel bearings (or anything else) were bad, there would be a sound all the time or at least whenever you shift. Using this same logic, we can rule out the clutch, throw out bearing, and everything else that releases/applies the clutch since the sound would have to happen every time you shifted. Since you said that the sound happens when you shift into 2nd from first, this leads me to believe that the problem has something to do with the synchros/hubs/internal transmission elements. I could be totally wrong, but that is my 2 cents.
