Stripped Bolt on Bottom of Alternator

Default Stripped Bolt on Bottom of Alternator

Hey guys, I stripped the bottom 14mm Alternator bolt trying to change my belt. The bolt is in there damn good. I even sprayed the **** out of it with Wd40 a couple times prior to stripping it.

Problem is I don't have a torch, and I don't really wanna use a grinder in there as it is a very tight squeeze.

What can I do to try and loosen it off before I just pay the local garage to do the job for me.

for the bottom bolt... which end is stripped? the nut or the bolt head?

the bottom bolt is just a bolt and nut. if you stripped the bolt head side thats more towards the outside just use a stripped socket tool and impact gun with a wrench on the other end to blast it off

if its the nut end then put the air wrench on the outter bolt head and put the stripped socket on a ratchet on the inside nut thats stripped and again pull trigger on air gun to blast it right off.

if neither of those work you can simply cut the bolt head off and just knock the rest of the bolt thru the other way.
if you dont have any air tools and you have free time just get a hack saw blade and start cutting the head off the bolt.
you can try the stripped socket without the air gun BUT ive never had luck with manually working those suckers but with a impact gun they have worked every time with ease!

just word of advice before ya do it.... if you can just go to a honda dealership and buy a new bolt and nut so you have it ready!
otherwise you gotta take your old bolt to hardware store to find the right size bolt and length. it will cost ya more money yes but its the right size and fit first time.... but either way just be sure you have a bolt that can be used to put the alternator back on you can always measure the length and buy it alittle longer in different size bolts and nuts from your hardware store cheap enough.

but i would NOT torch it!!!!!!!

Great advice man. Unfortunately I don't have any air tools. I should have been more specific, I don't have alot of light in there, but I am almost 100% positive it is just the nut side.

I don't have any stripped socket sets either, so I think I am going to have to go with the 'ye olde hacksaw method'.

just a heads up... when I replaced the alt on my civic, the bolt itself had seized/corroded itself to the lower bracket. I had to gently warm the bracket and beat the bolt out with a punch and hammer. I hope you don't run into this. I was able to get it out, but only because I had it up on a hoist and had access to a torch.

well the stripped sockets you can buy at autozone pretty cheap. mine is a blue box with like 5 sockets and they work pretty good. best with a impact gun. basically they are a sharp spiral that will chew into the bolt head to bite while going counter clockwise to take the bolt out.

of course you can always just call afew shops or stop by them and ask them how much they would charge to remove the bolt and replace it and thats all.... i wouldnt think they would charge to much for just one bolt. should only take them afew mins to bust it out. and if you got your own bolt to give them then even cheaper id think
i would guess 20bucks to knock it out. but i could be wrong... just have to ask them how much they would charge and cross your fingers the shop is cool and do it cheap. some might say high dollar amount just cause they dont want to mess with you at that time!

Well guys problem was 90% fixed...

Took it to my dads house. He has a way better selection of tools, with a proper BF-ing compressor and an assortment of pneumatic tools.

What we had to do after about 45 minutes of ****ing around. We cut/filed the nut all by hand and tried our hardest to preserve the threads on the bolt. Unfortunately I am a big gorilla and filed past the threads.. So we got the nut off, however like Silver Sedan.. I ****ed up the threads, and it is most likely seized in there. I don't know yet because I didn't wanna bang it out with a hammer. So once we did that it allowed us to put the new belt on and the old bolt is nutless but still holding everything together safely. In the next day or two I will go to Honda and get the proper bolt, and do what Sedan has suggested. ****in hoist it up tho just for one damned bolt? God.. I am gonna try off my back first.
