take off slow

Default take off slow

I have a 91 civic with a 1.5 engine with a 5 speed when i put it in 1st it take off slow while u have the gas down & when u go up on hills at speed like 50mph it will drop down speed quick need help figure this out any answers will help

I have the same car. Even when it is working properly you have to drop to 4th to go up much of a hill at 50 mph.

Check the spark timing, that will make it real slow but still it will run smooth.

How do u adjust da timing on that car

Warm up the engine then turn it off. Jumper the ECU test plug. This is a two wire plug found either above the carpet near the heater blower, or under the hood near the left strut tower (older models). The two wires are a green with white stripe and a brown wire. Push a suitable wire into the sockets of the plug to short the two wires together. Connect timing light to cylinder 1. Start the engine again. Adjust for the middle notch in the group of 3 on the crank pulley. Slightly better results may be obtained with the first notch, but if the engine knocks during the test drive (remove jumper and stop/restart engine before driving), go back to the middle one.
