Theres only one way to learn, and thats to get your hands dirty and actually do something. Why should he pay a professional? My view is that if i do something new, and i **** it up big time its alright as long as its my car. Its my car, and i'm willing to use it to learn on. The worst you will do is break something and you will be out a little bit more money, but in the end you have saved money doing the job yourself (timing belts cost alot to change). Also, i've learned more from jobs that i didn't know what i was doing when i walked in than i did from a job i've done a ton of time. I'll be the first one to tell you that i've broken stuff and spent crap loads of time fixing stuff i've broken learning. However, i would have broken it 20 times over just for the experiance of figuring it out. If you wanna get that crank pulley out, get an impact. However, i know that everyone doesn't have an air compressor and impact lying around so get a big breaker bar.

Umm its not that hard of a job...maybe a 30min. job but if you mess this up it could cost you a new engine not just a little money...SOHC easiest but DOHC are easay to...And you dont need to take off your crank pulley...Find your belt tensioner, loosen it, pull belt off, put new belt on, tighten tensioner, put a socket on crank pulley and spin counterclockwise, and then check to see if the belt is pretty tight but not rock hard tight and if its good then go vroom vroom...Check your belt every 100 miles or so for the first 300 miles or so to make sure it doesnt stretch out...

You would have to screw up the timing big time to really cause some damage. If your off by a few teeth, the engine wont' start but it won't break. As long as you line up the teeth correctly, you should be fine.
