Default Timing issue

I replaced my distributor to working condition. The problem is I haven't been able to adjust the timing - I don't have a gun. I have made some small turns on the distributor but it doesn't want to stay on. Should I continue to make these adjustments until I can get it to a shop? Am I risking damage to the crank by doing this? I was thinking I would just "rent" a gun - you know buy it, tell some BS story about how my old one is off or something and then take the new one back saying, the old one is back online. Is this too scummy to do? At this point I am desparate just to get it out of the driveway and to a real shop.

if you have an autozone near by, they have a "loan-a-tool" program...you can get one there...
