Default torque damper

what's the principle behind engine torque dampers? my friend gave me one for my eg sedan and it looks pretty simple but it seems it can be adjusted for length(?) what does this adjustment have to do with the way the engine or the car responds? i know that it relieves engine torque that robs the car of power but is it just plug and play and adjust the length up to the point that it perfectly connects the 2 brackets?
