Default Trans Chatter

Hey all, I have a '95 Civic, 1.6liter, 5spd. I've noticed recently that there is a slight chatter noise that seems to be coming from the transmission. As if it was low on fluid. This only happens during slow acceleration (clutch engaged) and appears to dissipate as the engine speed (RPMs) climbs and drowned out by engine noise. 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears mainly since by the 4th gear, the noise is drowned out either by the engine or road noise. I checked the transaxle fluid and it's good. Had a clutch job last year and wonder if it's related. Aside from checking the fluid by the plug, is there another trans fluid to check? I know some FWD manufacturers had transaxle and transmission fluid checks (2) for same manual transmission. Any thoughts or advice?

It could be the input shaft bearing. Pull the trans and see if the shaft has play.

There's only one oil compartment in a Civic transaxle. I agree it's probably one of the bearings in the transmission. If it's the input shaft you should hear it idling in neutral but it goes away when you push the clutch in thus stopping the transmission shaft. The bearings can be replaced without taking the transmission entirely apart. They are on the ends of the shafts, just crack the case open and take them off.

Noise that stops when you push the clutch in is usually from a bearing inside the transmission. I've never heard of this "hard spot on the flywheel" theory. The third gear problem is probably a worn out syncro on third gear.
