Transmission Issues
#22
If the ECU was not getting the VSS signal or an improper one, then your transmission would have problems. However, I would expect such a problem to throw code 17, which is apparently not happening. Is there any direct correlation between the speedo misbehaving and the shifting problem?

What happens if you unplug the VSS? Do you get code 17? Does the speedo stop working completely? Does the problem stay the same or get worse?
While you are at it, carefully inspect the contact terminals in the VSS and its connector for corrosion or damage.

Ok...the mechanic said the timing was good. He drove the car and the speedometer was working at the time and said it drove good...no limiter or anything. My wife picks up the car from him and speedometer doesnt work and it was having a hard time shifting. I tried unplugging the VSS and no codes or CEL. Car doing same exact thing. Haven't been able to get the speedometer to work to test to see how it runs. I'm thinking VSS needs to be replaced for sure. If that doesn't work any other suggestions?

I do see some corrosion down in the terminals of the VSS plug. Hopefully cleaning those out will help. If not, I'll get a new VSS and then if that don't work I'm just gonna break down and take it to the honda dealership and see what they say about it.

My guess is that the VSS is fine. Thoroughly cleaning the terminals may fix the problem. If not, some people get a good replacement plug at a junk yard and splice it into the harness.
I am loathe to the idea of bringing a car to the shop when an inexpensive DIY fix is so likely.
