Default troubleshooting question

hi folks. i'm new to the forum but have owned 3 honda's since my first - an '88 civic hatchback. currently i have an '89 civic hatchback si with 126K miles. the P.O.added a stainless exhaust header, stainless exhaust, aftermarket cold air and filter as well as integra brakes, 15" flik wheelswith dunlop performance tires. the "check engine" light recently came on during a stop and go commute and i've noticed there is some hesitation when i push the gas pedal - almost as though the fuel isn't getting sent properly. this happens for a few seconds and then the problem goes away. i'm probably going to have a mechanic take a look but thought i'd see if anyone might have a clue what could be happening, based on my description. any thoughts or suggestions on what i could do to troubleshoot? thanks!

could be the fuel pump. i would try sea foaming your car and see if that helps any.

any downside to seafoam? i've never used it but have read up on it. 'spose it couldn't hurt. my understanding is that i'll need to change the oil after seafoaming. thanks for the suggestion! i'll probably change out the fuel filter as well. if the problem persists though i'll check in with my mechanic and see if he can tell me what code comes up.

You can get the code read at autozone (or similar) for free. Why guess, if there's a code than there is a fix? It will save you time and money in the end.....

okay, i think the code read should be the priority. i'll check with autozone or similar to see what the code read produces. thanks.
