Unplug the switch. I think it is part of the latch. Don't cut any wires. Check that the wires have not been scraped or shorted to each other or to ground. There is also a switch on the lamp assembly that will force it to stay off.

If your battery still runs down even though the light is not on, it is probably a seperate problem.

 

OK i have a question too i have a 96 coupe and i dont have a light in the trunk i really need one in there but cant figure out where it goes or what wires hook up to it.. if anyone have the answer please email me on here thanks..
