Default Trust but verify

You or at least I always have thought new parts should be assembled correctly but after replacing an almost new distributor in my '91 Civic wagon I cleaned and probed it. Turns out one of the male spade connectors had not been pushed in carefully and it. Was just beside the girl spade as they lay in the transparent yellow protective sheath.
I just wonder if this was the cause of all my ignition woes?
