I just bought a used d16z6 and I would like to know what i can do to ensure that the motor is in good working order? Could anyone gave me like a quick check-list of things to do or look at to make sure the motor is in decent shape? Any help would be much appreciated.

Well you should have made sure it ran before you bought it. If you didnt check to see if it was good before you bought it then I have no idea what you were thinking.

I realize that now. Thats why i'm asking these questions, so if you don't have anything helpful to say then why are you writing me trying to make me feel dumber than I already must be. It was going to be a re-build from the beginning anyways, but if anyone else has anything intelligent to say, then I would appreciate it.

I would run Compression and Leakdown tests on it. I for one don't take chances just because it "looks good"

pull plugs and wires

hook up compression tester in #1 spark plug hole

hold motor with a buddy

hold throttle body wide open

hook a battery up to the starter starting with positive first. when you hook up the negative the motor is gonna crank.

crank for 5-10 seconds

look at gauge and write down number

repeat for other three cylinders

the difference shouldnt be any more than 10% of the maximum cylinder

hope this helps
