Default VTEC

OK, I am sure this has been asked many, many times before, but is there a quick and easy way to check if a car has VTEC? It is a 1998 EX with a VTEC tuning decal on the trunk, but the motor has been replaced since then because the previous owner dogged it to death. I did not do the engine replacement, because I did not own it at the time, I am the third owner of this car.

well it will not always say vtec on it if it has vtec, so like my car a 99 civic ex it has vtec because its an ex. So if they guy before put the same stock engine back in then we would know its vtec. take a pic of the engine and post it or ask they guy what engine he put in. btw i would take off the vtec stick on the truck....kinda dumb

The VTEC looks kind of cool because it looks like it came from the factory like that... The lady we bought it from did not know much about cars...Took it to walmart for maintenance. It leaks a little oil, because they overfilled it with oil and built too much pressure in the engine and messed up some seals and gaskets, it only leaks when the engine is hot.

Well, my engine looks alot like the engine in the sticky pic, without the funny air intake... I looked in that spot and it says B16Y8.... The tranny VIN matches the car VIN, could that be the original transmission?

It most likely is, the engine bay has not been cleaned good and I had to wipe old oil from the plate to see... Does anyone know at what RPM does VTEC engage on this engine?
