Vtec Help

I have a 98' civic EX w/ a D16Y8 Engine, which is suppost to be Vtec isn't it? I'm just wondering why then when i go to get replacement parts for under my hood I have to ask for parts that are for a non- Vtec engine in order to have them fit correctly. I'm I just going crazy or whats going on.
