Default Wacky Wipers cycle off windshield

I have a 95 CX hatchback and my wipers seem to creep. When you first turn them on they operate normally but the resting position gradually gets higher up on the windshield until the end of the passenger side wiper is about 4 inches up the glass. This then causes the driver's wiper to leave the windshield when it sweeps accross. It'll do this for a while and then go back to narmal and repeat. Is my motor just shot? Is there an adjustment in the mechanism or is there a relay that needs replacing? There seems to be a lot of play in the wiper motor as I can move the wipers a couple of inches up the glass, with the car off, before the motor stops me so I'm guessing that's part of it.

Check that the nuts that hold the wiper arms on are tight. If that's not it, the pivot joints in the linkage are worn out. I don't know if you can replace the plastic sockets separately or need to replace the whole linkage. To work on the linkage, you need to take the wiper arms off and remove the trim at the bottom of the windshield.
