What to check before a cross-country trip via the rocky mountains

Except I've noticed times when the coolant WAS boiling when the car was still running/idling--that is when I was driving over some mountain stretches. Still though, I figure what's the harm in getting a radiator cap, hopefully it'll contain it more.
