Default whine

Hiya!
New to the forum. So my wife (with a '97 EX) ran through a deep puddle the other day and ever since there is a strange grinding, whining. Increases in pitch as the RPMs go up but is there to some degree all the time, regardless of the clutch in or out or what gear it's in. It sounds like a tranny type sound I think, but how does the water thing play into it? The transmissions a closed system, right? Ideas? It's a disconcerting sound. It sounds...expensive...[&o]

Could it be a drive belt maybe? Sometimes when they get wet they start slipping or should I say the slipping is more apparent.

I like the drive belt idea. It's coming from the driver's side of the engine, it's vague can't narrow it down more than that...

Would a slipping drive belt be hard to replace?
