Default Wont stay in gear

I actually have to hold the gear shifter in place or it will pop out while driving.
Shifting gears when from firmly sliding into gear to all sloppy in one day.
What could be the cause of this an how can i fix it???

theres this lil plastic thing that controls where the shifter goes, forgot what its called its really late, and it also keeps shifter in place, its prolly pooped on yeh. ask a mechanic or autozone guy and he will get u set up. the only prob is, if i remember corectely, that its kinda a pain in the *** to get to it, i did with my friend on his car but took mine in and had them do it. like a hundred buxs,

Does it do this in every gear or just a few?

Just a few, 2nd and 3rd mostly. I recently installed a short shifter as well. I've been told that the
bottom end of the shifter is not long enough to fully engage the gear and that i need to get a
shifter adjuster kit or somethin.

yeah its either synchros bent shift linkage or worn out linkage bushings would be my guess.
leaning more towards synchros w/ how old it is
so basically either a tranny rebuild or one from the salveage yard if you could even find one for that year
