Is it worth saving?

Default Is it worth saving?

Got a 1995 Civic EX 4-dr. AT. 130K, the engine started knocking on me for a couple weeks, then one day home from work, the engine made a screeching noise and died. It started once after that, but no more. I think it may be a rod or bearing or piston seize? I really like the car, it has minimal rust, and i would consider putting maybe 1500-2000 to fix it. I would be doing the work along with my brother who is a retired Honda mechanic. What do you all think?

If you're doing all the work, it's definitely worth it. You can usually pick up a D-series engine and transmission for under $500 depending on which engine it is and the mileage. I've seen D16Z6's go for $300 and nothing wrong with them.

So i would be better of replacing the engine instead of fixing it? I wondered since it still turns over, there wouldn't be too much damage? I know until it tear it down i won't know for sure. And if i did replace it, i would like it to be a VTEC.

Honestly, it'd probably be more cost-effective to replace the engine than it would to re-build. The D16Z6 is the engine in your car; they're relatively common and like I said before, fairly cheap.

Of course, if you're planning on building the car for boost, now would be a good time to start since you'll probably need to replace most of the bottom end anyway

your car already has a vtec engine..

it would be cheaper and ALOT easier just to pull the engins and set another one in,
yea just look for a d16z6 engine its the vtec engine from a 92-95 ex/si, or you can look for any d15 or d16 block and put your head on it and still have vtec.
