Y8 motor ideas
Ok so i am writing this to find out the best way to increase my hp on my Y8 i know ppl will say go to a DOHC but for the mean time i am curious to know what would help i am not looking to go stupid fast but just enough to surprise ppl so you know i have a AT tranny which i plan to convert but when i do that i will also swap the motor any help and ideas would be appreciated and thanks in advance
PS everything is stock except the intake which came with the car its not name brand its a short air intake

Sorry I'm not nearly as much of an expert as most of the guys on here but I own a really nice Civic (I didn't build it but I hope to do some stuff with it), but here's what I've learned.
If you want to put a turbocharger on it, do not just throw one on. Upgrade your pistons and such, probably exhaust too. Don't want to tax the rest of the system too much before you put one on. If you do the right upgrades first it'll be fine.
A new intake, cold air or whatever would help the engine out too. A rebuild can help with general stuff, tell you if anything's wrong and see if any gunk has built up. New spark plugs never hurt and are pretty cheap. Some decent oil too, not the cheapest stuff that your local Gusher place wants to throw in. How much do you want to spend?
There are guides and FAQ's about this too, check around to see what people have done with theirs.

I recently had a D16y8 engine in my civic before i swapped it out for a GSR. If you want to keep the engine and upgrade it a bit you should consider the following:
If you want to turbo charge the engine:
-upgrade the exhaust
-rebuild the engine for the turbo (high pressure seals, after market internals)
*note* after market internals are not needed if you intend to run the turbo on low boost
-build the tranny for the turbo (if you don't you will rip right through your stock one anyways)
-upgrade fuel system
-reprogramable ECU
If you decide not to turbo it:
-IHE (intake, header, exhaust) *D16y8 engines respond very well to a header and exhaust set up.*
-reprogramable ECU
-and if you want to go farther you should consider upgrading the cams and cam gears.
-oh and a low weight flywheel are a really helpful edition if you are gonna swap out the tranny anyways.
just some ideas.
if you don't want to go super fast i would just stick with the IHE mods and ECU
that should be enough to impress somone.

If the engine is in good condition, you can boost it to 200-225WHP safely with a proper tune.

Also, "low boost" is not what determines whether or not you need to build the engine. How much HP the engine can take is what determines that.
A stock Honda manual transmission will hold the power just fine. You will probably want to upgrade the clutch though.
ok I must say thanks for the responses and to answer a few things well one money not sure how much but not much bc in time i will be swapping it but that’s in the future i can tell you that my motor is fairly new it had 10,000miles starting off and that’s about 1 yr ago maybe added a few extra thousand to it but turbo would be nice to do on that car I am almost done with the body just need a paint job now for exhaust I was thinking of doing a N1 skunk2 catback not sure if that’s good and headers I want to swap out but to what not sure but if I do turbo I wouldn’t have to worry bc that setup comes with it but any suggestions on which to add or get be great Cold air intake is in the steps thinking AEM or INJEN now for cam gear what be best bc I am not sure that you guys got I have an automatic and if that do anything for it but if so ok I will swap it and tranny I know there are things I can do to tighten and make it better just not sure of what and piston rings would it make since to swap them out and since the motor is fairly new and fuel rail I want to change again not sure to what I am grateful for all your input oh and to program the ECU how so by over chipping it or by tuning it
N1 exhausts are way too loud and sound like garbage IMO.
Don't waste money on a cam gear, it does nothing. All it does is allow you to adjust timing, but you really don't need to adjust that kind of timing unless you're making major power.
fuel rail is also a waste of money.
and now that i know you have an automatic, nevermind, it's not strong enough.
programming the ECU consists of installing a chip and then tuning (adjusting the parameters on the chip) with a wideband and other tuning tools to make the engine run its absolute best while being safe.

ok i see i really wasnt going for nasty loud looking for a good sound you know and so nothing i can do to make this motor a bit faster bc its automatic this sucks i guess i just keep it the way i have it as now as show then once done swap it all out
