Default I thought hondas were simple

hi hi im brenton

i bought a 97 honda civic hx yesterday. got it for 600 bucks but it just needs a motor. I had no idea that a freaking motor for this thing would be so hard to find. apparently it uses a d16y5.

I have no intention of working on this thing, it's has that weird cvt tranny that is also driving me up a wall. The only thing i have noticed is that apparently it has alloy rims and everybody want those alloy rims.

So those are for sale! lol. But i just need to find a motor for this thing. I've browsed around a bit trying to see what engines will work with this car. but why the hell does honda have like 20 million diff engines for the civic? lol.

Any help would be greatly received.

lol. you can put any of those engines in that car with time and money. i beleive the hx was a "hybrid" model. its mainly for gas saving. i beleive you can easily swap in a d15b7
(92-95 civic non ex) d16z6 (92-95 civic ex) d16y7 (96-00 civic non ex) and d16y8(96-00 civic ex). but with these swaps you will need tranny (not to sure if you can still use yours) engine harness and ecu. some one else can correct me if i am wrong.

as for the wheels, those are the famous hx rims. lots of people like them because they are OEM and light weight. you should hang on to them

and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. Yes, the famous Civic HX rims are in high demand because they weigh something like 9 pounds apiece.

You'll want to look for a D16y7 or D16y8. y7 is nonvtec, y8 is vtec. The y5 is CVT and has that weird 3 stage vtec.

What happened to the original engine?

im located in frostburg maryland. craigslist is hit and miss. and the only junk yard around wanted 1200 for it. and the engine almost locks up according to the previous owner

Wish I was closer. I'd help you tear down the engine and see if it's salvageable. It might be cheaper to have the engine rebuilt if you want to stick with a y5.

try tearing apart the y5 and see if you can fix it. otherwise go with a d16y7 or a d16y8. if you can i would go with the y8

my roommate and i are going to tow the car to the house here soon and start tearing it apart to see what the deal could be.

in theory, any of those engines should bolt straight on to my tranny correct?
