RE: Deal or No Deal?
The difference between a reliable turbo and a headache is summed up in a single word, "maintenance." Most problems with turbos result from neglect and abuse. So first, find out the car's maintenance history, most important the oil and oil filter change frequency. Look inside the turbo if you seeVarnish, deposits or residue thismeans the turbocharger oil could have been "cooked" sometime, probably by shutting down the engine immediately after a hot run without a few minutes of idling to cool things down. Cooking will also probably be found on bearings as well meaning a rebuild. If rust gets inside the housing, it can ruin the turbo internally.Look for damage to the blades. Reach in and spin the shaft. It should easily turn by hand. Pull back-and-forth and up-and-down on the shaft to make sure the bearings are still healthy. There should be minimal play. Max boost for the t3/t4 is 15psi. The T3 will effectively cover most engine ratings from 175 to 250 hp.
hope this helped!
