im looking to turbo my 1994 civic ex D16z6 and i was wondering if i should buy a kit or throw one together. Also what size turbo and brand should i get. I was looking at a garret turbo and planning to get some stuff off of ebay like a short throw shifter, IC and charge piping, boost ctrl, gauges, manifold, braided down pipe, clutch, oil and vaccum lines and fittings. Also i was wondering a good type of engine management i should use. Im just trying to learn more about the stuff before i go and buy. also are there any install guides online. Please help Thanks

 

first off you dont want to put this in yourself, its not like installing an intake. And you need to get it tunned and dynoed by pros. I mean if you good with your hands i guese you could do it but i wouldnt recommend it. Second have you done any research? try looking a turbo kits that companies sell and then make a list of lost parts to look for on ebay. Your going to need to do a lot of mods other than just the turbo kit itself, like brand new ignitions components and if you dont already have a cat back exhaust you will need to get one. Some of that ebay stuff is cheap, like i have heard about the ebay turbos that the headers and manifods tend to crack and break, causing all kinds of problems. Do some more research, but im sure many people who have turbos on here can help. Also take a look at the projects page, there is a guy building a d series turbo so maybe you could take a look at his parts.

 

Meh, i disagree with you about not being able to do it. The big part is research. Some people spend months researching. You need to know your goals for hp. You can buy a kit but pay more money, or assemble one yourself. There are plenty of threads on what you need as far as parts. Do your research before you consider doing it. Its a big investment. And the tune is a huge part of it. A turbo'd civic without a tune is like a marathon runner without legs.

 

well what im saying is it sounds like he thinks it could be a 1 day thing. and if you have no idea what your doing then you probably dont want to mess around with something that cost you like 4 grand.

 

Itll be 4 grand if you buy a kit, or if you build the block/head. Otherwise, with the right research and shopping, you can probably do it for <1500

 

^ if you say $1500, look to spend near $2K. Maybe not, maybe you will, but i'd HIGHLY recommend having an extra chunk of money set aside for unforseen costs. They pop up everywhere.

Ha! 2k for a reliable turbo setup out the door? Maybe for a few days of boost with pvc charge piping and home depot boost control. Sure there are writeups for do it yourself turbo projects for 1200-2000, but i hardly think they are reliable. Not only do you need turbo components. Injectors, performance clutch, chipped ecu, ecu conversion harness, boost control, egt or A/F, boost gauge, headstuds, new gasket, tune. Then you can consider unforseen costs.

Hahahahaha Okay buddy. Ill let you know my final costs. Ive done my research and have a list of things that I need and their prices, so how bout you tell all the other thousands of civic owners who have done it that its not possible. Mind youre own business, kbye

 

price depends on how much HP your looking for, low boost does not require the upgrades that high boost cost.

and arust45 lots of people spend months and months looking for deals on parts, how much you spend just depends on how hard you look and how patient you are. Not saying that there are not$2k turbos that are not the best setup, but there are many that ARE good setups.
