Nitrous Bottle
I recently watched the the fast and the furious again as it was showing on USA and i was wondering about the scene where the Johnny Tran shoots up the eclipse and the nitrous bottle explodes. As far as i know, N20 is not flammable by itself so could is really be possible for a nitrous bottle to ignite if you shoot at it?
No, N2O is NOT flammable. its an oxidizer, so it promotes the combustion, but its not the fuel for the fire. gasoline burns at a ratio of 14.7:1 and the oxygen in the nitrous allows you to burn more fuel. thats whats actually flammable, the fuel. if you have a balloon full of nitro, and you hold a flame to it, it will pop the balloon, but you wont get a huge flameball. you need the extra fuel there to get the burn.
copper can spark.
but fuel and nitro (or pure oxygen for that matter) mixed together WILL ignite, and in the right container, will explode. we did an experiment in high school with oxygen and acetylene. we had pipes to hold welding rods that had one end capped. we would hold the acetylene torch feeding into it, then strike a flint over it. all it would do is a slow burn. then we would do the same with the acetylene (fuel) AND the oxygen (oxidizer) in the tube together and then when you would strike it, it would pop loud enough to rattle the windows. two buildings away.

yeah we did a similar experiment. filled a balloon with pure hydrogen, put it up on the celing and lit it. slow burning. mixed it with pure oxygen in the next balloon. FWOOOM. lifted celing tiles three floors up
i still dont see where you get the ignition source from. would the bullet spark any container because of the velocity? or would it light from the heat on the bullet from the friction?
