I would stay away from using a turbo without an intercooler. Turbos generate an outrageous amount of heat, and with nothing to cool it, it will put a lot of wear and tear on your engine. Regardless of running low boost, the heat is going to still be there, and it is a risk. Good luck, and I hope eveything works out for you!

I'm running a non intercooler turbo system at 7psi on my 95 civic d15/t3 (164 whp on dyno). I've had it for over a year like this. The intake does feel too warm to keep my hand on for more than a second, but I have had no problems with detonation. A/F ratio is good and have had no detonation.
However, the oil seal on the turbo is leaking a ton of oil now. I wonder if the hot compressed air is making the engine run even hotter and somehow blew the seal. Or the old saab turbo died of natural causes.
I am going to put an intercooler on with my next set up, t3/t4 with bigger injectors and safc.
I didn't let not having the $ stop me from boosting, just do it and run 6-7psi.
