Question about boost/MPG?
Hey, well my old car just crapped out on me so im looking around for a new car. Ive seriously considered a 00 civic si but i have some questions. Im getting it for the MPG first off as its my DD, but i also want it to not be completely slow. Id like to eventually supercharge it for some fun, but since in new with boost my question is, how badly does it effect your MPG both when its on and off? Thanks for any help
well if you supercharge it you will always be in boost....and the SI isnt all that slow stock compared to the other civics.. if you boost it...depending on the turbo and trim if your not in boost, you should get stock fuel economy....but it will eat fuel like candy while its in.....but like i said, im not sure how much a supercharger would effect it.
i drovemy friends 00 turbo si around for a while with 680CC injectors at 22psi and it got ~25MPG out of boost and ~15-17 MPG
but htats been a while ago and i did basic math in my head so my numbers are probably wrong

^ Yes, less with superchargers. With turbos you can keep out of spool, which means your car runs basically like it is naturally aspirated. So mileage should stay near stock with a light foot. With a supercharger though, the motor is always in boost. So more fuel is consumed even at cruise.

That doesn't make sense.A supercharger is directly connected to the crankshaft by a belt. That means for every revolution of the crankshaft, the supercharger will turn a fixed number of revolutions. It's just like a cam. Without that direct, constantdrive, cam timing could not be achievable, and motors wouldn't work so well. Transmissions operate on the same principle (gearing), as well as anything connected to the crankshaft.
