Default turbo hatch?

So As some of you might of seen I just recently acquired a 98 hatch. It has no motor and is definitely a project car. I am planning on boosting it just becasue well I have a NA gsr swapped Civic as my daily driver. So I want to have a boosted civic as well. So since the car has no motor I get the luxury of starting with a blank canvas. Now for power goals I am looking to get 275-300hp the two motors I have been considering is a d16y8 or a B18B it seems like either of these would be good options. So your probably wondering what am I asking. Well what I am looking for is to know what I would need for either of these motors to reach my power goals? And what all do I need to buy do have a complete turbo setup?

I'd go with a D16Z6 though over the Y8, it's OBD1 already which will help with tuning and is almost the exact same motor. The gearing in the transmission is almost identical too. Really though the best D-series option would be the JDM D15B (130hp, OBD1, less miles since it's imported from Japan, has an LSD, and is not too expensive on ebay.)

Really though for the most power you should get the B18B.

I was going to say the same thing as trusted d. Not saying the y8 is bad but since you have the choice def go with the z6. It doesn't have the problem that y8's have with oil at higher rpm's aswell as other issues (can't remember off the top of my head).

What kind of money do you have for the project or are willing to put in?

Well its a on going project so I am willing to spend between 2-2.5k I would think it could get me a decent motor and turbo setup.

The plan is to turn this car into a type r clone with the exception of the powerplant. The reason being is I really cant stomach spending 4k+ on a motor so I am just going to go boost.

I was really leaning towards putting in a turbo LS but ever since I put a GSR swap in my coupe I ahve been biased towards B-series motors. But I know a d would be cheaper. So if thats the route to go what alll do I need to acquire to have the kit ready. Also is the d series just as reliable under boost as the LS would be?

Oh yeah it's reliable enough. I would suggest you go to turbod16.com to get a grasp on the d's potential.

I love the d-series, it's like rooting for the underdog. I think it's way cooler and impressive to have a fast as hell D-series than a B-series. Buying the B-series is like taking the easy way out.

The cheapest way to get a kit is to buy piece by piece, or buy a complete (or almost complete) used setup. check places like hondaswap.com (where I got mine) and hondatech. If you buy piece by piece make sure things fit correctly, like 5 bolt or 4 bolt flanges, where it mounts in case you want a/c or not, tubular or cast. Prolly tubular with that goal.

Make a check list of items you need befor you start buying and make sure your not leaving anything out.

Ask the right questions befor you buy too. Like if the turbo smokes at all, or any oil leaks.

So I picked up the z6 and tranny today. So my question is what all has to be done to wire up the z6 to my hatch being the motor is OBD1 and the car is OBD2?

for the ECU end of the wiring, you can get an OBD2 to OBD1 conversion harness (this is just plug and play, very easy). At the distributor you will need an OBD1 harness (this will require splicing wires and doing some research to find out which wire is which.) i'm not sure, but that might be all that you need.

Is said hatch completely stock? If you plan on reliably pulling 275-300hp out of that motor on 2.5k you have greatly underestimated your costs. Building the motor to handle that much power is the easy part. Regardless, have you ever been in a 300hp hatch? Rediculous power to weight. I suggest starting with a mild setup and gradually increasing your power goals as you become accustomed to the ins and outs of a turbocharged car.
