Default how can you paint old rims

I have browsed search and found a few topics on this matter. I just ordered a set of rims for my wifes honda, but we want to have some to throw on in the harsh winters and crap seasons where we drive alot in gravel and what not. Our steelies are looking junky, kind or rusting a tad and not at all siver like they once were.

I have seen wheel paint and what not, but I wanted to see how hard it is to actualy "paint" these by hand. They can look like crap for all I care, I just want them to be even, not rusty somewhere and chipped others, then fine in some. Can you just use some sandpaper to rough them up, maybe a dremel to get into the crevaces and then prime / spray just like anything else?

I wondered if anyone has attempted to restore some older rims, or crappers without doing the powdercoat route. These aren't worth powdercoating anyway, they are just winter rims.

Any advice would be awesome!

Stu
