When I start to get around 60 plus my steering wheel starts to freak out and I usually have to hold on pretty hard to stop it from doing so...also occurs when i break hard...any ideas what the problem may be?

 

your wheels probably needs to be balanced.

Are your lugs tight? I had the same thing happen to me. I thought it was my brakes. It was my wheel bout to fall off.

 

Do you have a bent wheel? Cuz I had that problem going about 65 and it shakes real bad and stopping too.
Check and see if ur wheel is bent or it just might need balancing.
And if it does that when braking. Ur rotors might be shot. I know mine are everytime I break.
