Default 1989 4 door Civic DX AT removal tips?

Hello everyone,
I am new to the site but hope you will help me anyway. My Honda was taking an excessivly long time to shift from 2nd to 3rd when the engine is at normal operating temp and getting worse everyday. The transmission shop says it needs to be rebuilt. Anyone here have any tips on the the easiest way to remove it besides paying someone else to do it. I have changed transmissions on RWD cars but never on a FWD.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

I did mine in a 99 DX. Drain fluid. Read manual follow steps. It was easier than I thought it was going to be.

yea you can just put the front of the car on jack stands and pull the wheels, axles, starter, and all the wiring connectors and all. Then you just start unbolting the tranny and once completely unbolted then start prying it out.

This is obviously just brief explanation of what to do. Like StonedCold said read a manual for more detailed instructions.

Thanks for the quick reply. It all sounds pretty basic except for removing the axles. Is there any trick to removing the axles?

if you dont have access to a strong air compressor and impact gun, your gonna need a big breaker bar and probably a pipe extension to put over it. Last time I did my axles I used a 36volt Dewalt 1/2 in drive impact and it zipped the axles nuts right off. Once you get the axles out of the hubs then use a pry bar to pry them out of the trans

Download the 88 Civic service manual (added May 15, 2008) here:

Your 89 Civic will be very similar.

Is there anything else that I should check before I remove my transmission?
The problem is:
long delay when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and getting worse. After the shift is complete the car acts normal. When cold the shifting is almost normal, but at operating temp the above problem occurs.
Is it possible that some passage or screen is clogged or is that just wishfull thinking?
If it does need a to be rebuilt, is there a good exchange place or do I need to have mine rebuilt? This transmission has 200,000.00 miles on it.

It might be cheaper if you rebuilt it but You could always find a used one with less miles on it and scrap the old trans for some cash.

Have you tried a transmission fluid flush with genuine Honda transmission fluid?
