I went to a dealership today and was told that the entire transmission needed to be replaced, but other than the 3rd gear slipping and some loose bearing noise, the car runs just fine. Is there any way the problem can be fixed without paying for a new transmission

 

Automatic or Manual? Automatics are really hard and a PITA to fix. Usually, they install a new or remanufactured trans into your car and send the old one to be remanufactures.

Depending on what year your car is, it's often cheaper to replace the tranny with a used import than to have it rebuilt. But if you do want it rebuilt, it sounds like your only problem may be shot bearings on the 3rd gear shaft.

 

its a 99 ex, but when i first got the car it still slipped in 3rd just not as bad as it is now. I thought it was rare to replace standard transmissions. Previous owner must have done something stupid

 

that new it is rare to replace a trans, but it is probably cheaper to buy a used trans from a salvage yard than a remanufactered, or to get it fixed.
