3rd gear syncro problem
I'm a little worried about my transmission. Sometimes when I shift into third it scratches and sounds like the syncro is going out, but other times it wont happen at all. I have a bad feeling that im gonna need a new transmission but i hope not. Any ideas on what else it could be or a cheaper way to fix it would be appreciated.

RE: 3rd gear syncro problem
I have a '94 that will sometimes grind.
I'm fairly certain that the synchro is going on it and I'll eventually have to replace it. On mine, if I shift into 3rd around 3,000 RPM... it usually wont grind or kick out. If I am getting on it and shift later... say 5,000 RPM... it will almost always either get real notchy, and pop into 3rd, or it will grind.
I'm certain mine is the synchro. I had a little GEO that did the same thing several years ago and it was the synchro.

RE: 3rd gear syncro problem
i was told by a freind that this stuff you can get at the chevrolet dealer called synchro mesh would stop grinding onn our hondas but i was also told that on domestic vehicles this sstuff would make the internals wear faster has anyone heard of this stuff or if it would screw up our tranny's

RE: 3rd gear syncro problem
ive heard of synchromesh, but never used it, so im not sure on that. but its for sure the synchros. it is pretty common on hondas for the 3rd gear to go. i have a slight scratch in third every now and then, but i just skip 3rd as much as i can, which is quite a bit, because i dont go over 60 except on the freeway, and i can shift out of 2nd at about 55, and go right to 4th or 5th. that ought to help me extend my tranny life for a while anyway. but if i take an extra instant, I can still shift into third at high rpms, so i still have a while.
