Default 94 Civic is leaking tranny fluid

So, I bought my wife a 94 Civic Coupe (black) for 900 bucks. Test drove it, looked under the hood, etc....seemed ok. Had a cracked windshield, got that fixed for 185 bucks, no biggie

Then, dropped it off for an inspection today.........mechanic says it has a leaky CV boot, the pads and rotors, while they will pass inspection, need replaced soon, but the big thing I'm worried about is.........

Tranny Leak. He doesn't know where it's leaking from yet, has to clean it up to find it he said. Now, if it's something major like a main seal, anyone know what kinda cost I might be looking at??? Ugh.......

Thanks for the 'lol' at the beginning of your post, that's pretty lame imo. This is serious, my wife needs the transportation. This is devastating to me. If this is how you folks here treat people, your forum is pretty awful.

if it is too much you can go here

http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.c...y=&userPage=52
there are 2 AT's for that car listed at $100 plus shipping with a 6 MO warranty. find out how much your mechanic will charge you to R&R the tranny for you..
I dont think he was LOLing at your misfortune.. I think he was LOLing at the fact that you got the car so cheap that it makes a repair like that look really expensive. I could be wrong though.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

when i bought my civic it was leaking transmission fluid. I got underneath it with some degreaser, a magnifying glass and some jb weld and got it sealed up in about 30 mins.

ok, I'll buy that =D

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I'm off to the shop right now to pick up the car and find out how bad the leak is. Hopefully they found a small leak and threw a spot of weld on there

Thanks for both your replies hmdaigle and sbowers

this is the car btw

Try Barrs stop leak, its a cheap fix. I mean for the price you got the car for, just spend the bucks on a new tranny IMO. Not sure how long that'll fix the tranny or what else it will do to it, but its been around long enough to be tried and true.

Well, I got it back from the shop today - needed 4 new tires to pass inspection, and the 'white' blinker bulbs in the tailights had to be replaced with amber to pass. So, so far -- 900 for the car, 185 for a new windshield, 350 for tires/inspection/bulbs

Total: 1435.00

Turns out the mechanic didn't have time to check out where the leak is coming from, so I'll have to wait to find that out. It will soon need new pads/rotors and a new CV boot though, that much I know for sure.

Weird thing about the tranny leak, I'm not seeing any tranny fluid on the ground, even after the car has been sitting for 2 days or so in the same spot. So I dunno, how bad can it really be?

I'm assuming you have an auto tranny. Have the car sit in the same spot and run the car for 10-15 min. Sometimes automatic transmissions will only leak when the car is running, especially if the leak is above the oil level. The pump throws fluid everywhere so that will bring out any leaks that are there. I've dealt with quite a few leaks before and the #1 thing is that you have to get the trans and everything around it looking spotless. THere can't be any dirt, fluid, or crap anywhere in or around the trans b/c otherwise you won't be able to spot the leak. Brake cleaner or engine degreaser helps. Pads and rotors are pretty easy to change, axles are a bit harder but not a big deal.
