for instance: a subaru WRX runs AWD...meaning that it drives all four wheels at once. my GMC jimmy, on the other hand, is 4WD...meaning you can select it to be in 2wd or 4wd. when its in 2 its RWD an when its in 4 its AWD. it also has 4hi and 4lo...the two of which i dont really understand...but i think 4hi is mostly for traction and keeps more or less the same pwer and tq as 2wd for like winter and stuff, and in 4lo the differentials are geared completely differently to provide optimum torque transfer for mud and slush at the expense of less actual horsepower (which would make sense...4lo meaning lower RPMs...therefore lower power)

its mostly a slight terminology difference and can technically be used interchangeably, but AWD usually means driving all four wheels all the time. 4WD usually means you can run it in either 2 or 4...and usually when its in 2 its RWD.

4-Lo is geared lower, so the RPM's are higher. 4-lo is for creeping slowly over obstacles, not mud. You want to keep wheelspeed up in mud and snow to clean the tread (you want the tires to spin faster than your forward speed flick the mud out instead of gumming up the tires) as you travel through it.
And most 4wd or awd cars do NOT put power to all four wheels, that is totally dependant on the differential setups.
