I have heard several people complain about hard shifting honda auto trans. My 91 dx hatch was no exception so I added a bottle of slick50 for transmissions and it helped a lot. The positive shift design of hondas trans will never be smooth because there is no slippage between shifts but the additive helped a lot. Also keep the oil level full, if it drops down from leakage or whatever, hard shifting will worsen.
