Hi. I recently bought a 99 civic lx sedan. It has an automatic transmission and the previous owner had told me that one day the shift **** popped off when he put it into park and ever since then when he puts the car in park, the park safety switch will not engage. I took the shift **** off to assess the damage that may have been done to the shift **** itself when I realized that when the shift **** is removed, the car goes into park and you can take the key out with no issues. I took apart the center console pieces to take a look at what may be happening and found out that when the shift **** is on, the safety switch does not engage like it should. I believe that the metal shaft with the slant on it that the button on the shift **** pushes down on may be higher than it is supposed to.
